Dental Therapy vs. DHAT

Dental Therapist

• Licensed by their state to serve a wide range of patients

(typically members of underserved communities such as low-
income, Medicaid enrollees, and Federally Qualified Health

Centers (FQHC).

Dental Health Aide Therapist (DHAT)

• Midlevel providers authorized to practice on federally-

recognized tribal lands and on members of federally-

recognized tribes.
• Federal law requires state legislatures to authorize the

licensure of DHATs.
