BE
PREPARED
very year, disasters disrupt hundreds of
E thousands of lives. Each catastrophe has
lasting consequences, both for people and property. Being
prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that
accompany disasters. In the case of a fire and where to seek
refuge, neighborhoods, families, and individuals should
know what to do. Educating the public and getting them to
take preparatory actions to better protect themselves in the
face of natural hazards has led to an extensive study of risk.
Recognizing that the scope of disaster preparedness
education must reach a very diverse population means the
methods of delivering risk communication must also be
broad and inclusive. The over-dependence on social media
and high-speed Internet connections, sadly, has the
potential to leave many people in this country without
access to valuable information on disaster preparedness.
