2022 Conferences Notables:
In 2022, FGMA continued to build our public safety thought leadership role at the Firehouse Station
Design Conference and F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Symposium. As SDC conference leaders, we
hosted One-on-1 sessions with fire departments from across the country and presented Train as You
Play; Maximizing Training Flexibility and Incorporating Health, Safety, and Well Being in Training Facility
Design at the F.I.E.R.O. Public Safety Training pre-conference. Additional presentations included:

• Decon Now: Designing for Exposure Reduction and Contaminant Control (Christopher Kehde and
Katie Atwater)
• Holistically Healthy Fire Stations (Paul Erickson)

• To Be or Not to Be the Community Will Decide (Katie Atwater)
• Building Resilience with Sleep, Energy Pods and Decompression Rooms (Paul Erickson and Dr. Carla
Moore)
• 411 on Materials (Raegan Porter and Jason Estes)
In Texas, FGMA presented at the Capital Area Suburban Exchange (CASE) Conference on the topic of
Understanding the Design Process: From Idea to Ribbon Cutting.
Brian Meade also developed and moderated a panel at the AIA Architecture for Justice conference on
the City of Austin’s Reimagining Public Safety Initiative's Impact on Future Austin Police Department
Planning. Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon was one of the panelists.

The Reimagining Public Safety Initiative (RPS) is the city of Austin’s holistic approach to assessing and
evolving public safety systems to meet current and future community needs equitably and efficiently.
This initiative helped inform the latest Austin Police Department (APD) planning study in 2021–22 for the
future headquarters campus. This session, which will include members of the planning team as well as
APD staff, will share highlights of the study, including top goals for staff retention/recruitment,
programming for community engagement, providing ample wellness spaces, and enhanced victim
services.
At this year’s National Park and Recreation Association Conference, FGMA co-hosted Texas Night and
Rich DePalma led two panels for the City of Austin:
• Five Years Out, A Look at the Impact of the City of Austin's 2016 Update to the Parkland Dedication
Ordinance and Lessons Learned.
• The Zilker Metropolitan Vision Plan. Inclusion Not Made Easy – Approaches in Addressing
Traditional Power Structures.
In addition, FGMA’s 2023 Texas Recreation and Parks Society conference presentation proposal was
accepted. It will be on March 1, 2023 and the title is “Maximizing Your Municipal Golf Facility.” The
presentation will be by Dan Nicholas and Rich DePalma.
