   The deviation is strategically linked
to systemic constraints affecting PG enrolment, particularly the impact of
high academic staff attrition in 2023 and the slow pace of recruitment processes across the university. These delays were exacerbated by external factors such as extended notice periods required at other institutions and internal inefficiencies in finalising appointments. From a quality assurance perspective, DUT has taken a deliberate shift to prioritise supervisor readiness and alignment of PG research with national development priorities and DUT’s ENVISION2030. As a prescriptive solution, a comprehensive academic staffing plan is being implemented in 2025, alongside fast-tracked recruitment protocols and targeted supervision capacity-building. These steps aim to stabilise enrolment trends and ensure long-term sustainability and quality in PG education.

There is a demonstrable consistent improvement of the current recruitment strategies to target school leavers into SET programmes. Ongoing attention and enhanced interventions to prepare school learners to prepare for SET programmes is a priority and underway with SET capacity development programmes
in DUT Feeder schools having been strengthened in 2024 and will continue to be extended to other schools.

The 26% over-enrolment (a repeat of 2023) requires a rigorous faculty control mechanism to be implemented for FTEN enrolment from 2025 onwards. The 2024 FTEN enrolment numbers were reduced from 26% over-enrolment to only 378 students (15,5%). Nevertheless, greater enrolment control mechanisms are needed for 2025 and in future years.
