The PG headcount shortfall remains a concern. This decline could be partly attributed to delays in submission and CHE approval of new PG qualifications
to allow for PG enrolment targets to
be met. Honour’s graduates are not
yet as high as expected to feed into master’s programmes. Honours and M registrations require greater monitoring in the coming years, with greater campaigning particularly for Honours and master’s students and for overall
PG registrations. Finally, enrolment targets must be reviewed based on last 5-year intakes and ensuring that ECP programmes are effectively championed to increase student postgraduate interest and enrolments.

Despite a 7% increase in enrolment in 2024, four main factors impact on enrolments:
1. Post-Graduate Diploma and
Advanced Diploma programmes remain unpopular with students, as they are seen as longer paths to a Master’s qualification.
2. The absence of funding from NSFAS and NRF for PG Dip and Advanced Diploma students impacts on enrolments.
3. The demand for Honours programmes is not as high as expected due to them not having a higher professional registration possibility after completion.
4. Several programmes were delayed in their degree offerings, preventing sequential and timely intake to boost enrolment.
The recent introduction of Honours degrees in several programmes will help increase enrolment numbers and improve articulation to master’s and doctoral programmes.
Improvements to PG enrolment for attention in 2025 and beyond are to:
1. Enhance financial incentives
like scholarships or employer
partnerships.
2. Use data-driven recruitment
strategies to target prospects and
amplify digital presence.
3. Build undergraduate to graduate
pipelines to boost retention.
