planned FTEN enrolment was set at 9,372; however, actual enrolment reached was 8,950 students representing 95.5% of the target. This shortfall was primarily due to certain programmes not being offered. The total student population, including both FTEN and returning students, reached 34,495 in 2024, reflecting a 5.9% increase from 2023’s total of 32,574.
Good enrolment growth occurred in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, with a 18.9% increase in FTEN intake, and the Faculty of Applied Sciences, which saw a 2.0% rise. The Faculty of Management Sciences also recorded a 6.0% increase in FTEN enrolment. However, the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics and the Faculty of Health Sciences saw declines in FTEN intake of 2.7% and 4.3%, respectively, while the Faculty of Arts and Design showed no change from 2023 to 2024. Overall the PG student numbers grew by nearly 2.0% in 2024. Figure 1 depicts the five-year trend in total headcount enrolments.

Figure 2 illustrates the racial composition of the student population in 2024, showing minor changes from 2023 to 2024. Indian student enrolment dropped from 5.65% to 4.73%, and White student enrolment fell from 0.67% to 0.57%. Other racial groups remained nearly unchanged at 0.41% and 0.42%. Coloured student enrolment decreased slightly from 0.86% in 2023 to 0.8% in 2024, while African student enrolment rose from 92.41% in 2023 to 93.58% in 2024.
