COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LIFETIME ACHIEVER AWARD
MR CRISPIN HEMSON.
Mr. Crispin Hemson, who recently retired from DUT, received an award recognizing his outstanding contribution and excellent service in community engagement during his time at the university. In addition to teaching in the General Education Programme, he led the Durban Innovative Leadership Programme, which cultivates leadership skills in DUT students and community activists. As an environmental activist, he also heads the Friends of Pigeon Valley, a group dedicated to protecting an urban nature reserve in Glenwood, Durban.

MS NOMFUNDO MBATHA
The late Ms. Mbatha has significantly impacted community engagement by supporting student initiatives focused on gender issues. As a lecturer in the Department of Information and Corporate Management, she has guided student leaders, secured venues, and provided transportation and financial assistance for food parcel collections and school visits. Her work fosters mutually beneficial collaborations, aligning with ENVISION2030’s goals of applying knowledge practically and developing future-ready graduates. Through her dedication, Ms. Mbatha empowers students and strengthens community ties.
