Gargoyle Cathedral

We wanted a unique way to display Checkmate and several of the
individual gargoyle characters. We decided to build a cathedral. It

was always viewed as a custom pedestal. But it became one of the
             defining pieces in the exhibition.

Excluding the characters, chessboard, and the circular stained glass

window hung on the wall, the cathedral measures 48 inches high
by 54 inches wide by 24 inches deep. And it took over 40 pounds

of encaustic to paint the bricks and exterior surfaces.

Building something on this scale requires a lot of measuring and
planning. The installation had to fit the allocated space in the

museum and be scaled to accommodate Checkmate.
