Fleet 5 Newport, Rhode Island
                       Southern Narragansett Bay, 1971
        Fleet Captain: Scott Mason

Fleet 5 remains reduced in number but hardy and in high spirits. This past
summer saw three boats active on the weekly Tuesday Spinnaker evening, and
five Ensigns coming out for the Wednesday Blade and Main nights.

We have some good news to report for this upcoming 2023 summer: Challenger
has been purchased by one of our regular crew from Gusto and has secured a
mooring in Newport harbor. So, new owner John Spohn, will be actively racing
Challenger this coming season! Also, local #61, Lone Eagle, is undergoing a
restoration and has joined the ECA and our Fleet 5. They plan on cruising this
season. (Maybe we can coax them into a JAM night in the future?!)

News just arrived that unfortunately, When, #62, owner Dave Goss has sold her
and sadly she leaves our Fleet 5 and will travel to the Thames River Fleet 57.
When has enjoyed a very active racing career, participating in several Nationals,
and almost all our II/III regionals since the late ‘90s. She will be missed along
        with “The Men from When”!

For our two evening summer series’, we had a run of great dry weather, with only
two races cancelled all season. Results as follows….

In July of 2022, Fleet 5 hosted the II/III Regionals in conjunction with the Sail
Newport Regatta. We had a good turnout of 9 boats on the starting line. (See
really great write up by Mike Macina, of Fleet 34, in ECA Newsletter, Fall 2022.)
It was a very light air July weekend but with beautiful clear skies and very warm
afternoons. In the end, we only scored four races. The results were as follows:

        1 , Hamburglar, #1693, Dennis McLaughlin, Mattapoisett, Fleet 76
