          BOOKS, SOFTWARE & OTHER THINGS

Do you have a favourite book you have read or app / computer software you use and would like
others know about? Get in touch and Gen Mag Online will publish your review. For example, on a
personal note I use Legacy Family Tree software to help in my genealogy research. I’ve tried a
number of different programs over the years but always come back to Legacy. Why? I find it very
easy to use. Searching for names is simple and straightforward, as is inputting information.

When you open the software, the screen is divided into 2 halves; one half for the husband and the
other for the wife with their basic details and children easily seen. Many other programs open up
immediately with a pedigree view. While you can do this Legacy, personally I prefer the family view
as I find it much easier to navigate.

There is one snag however that I have found using Legacy - the merge feature when importing a
GedCom file is not always as intuitive as Legacy tells us it. I have always found it a bit messy, and
have often ended up with duplicates. Manual merging also takes quite some time. Roots Magic
handles merging much more smoothly and accurately.

A full review of Legacy Family Tree will be made in the next edition of Gen Mag Online.

Over the coming months it is hoped to develop a bookshop on the site. Two publications are already
nearing publication. The first is a basic guide for beginner’s just starting out, while the second called
The Good, the Great & the Downright Bad is a mini biography of ancestors of Isabel Dutton, many
of whom are either forgotten or not well known.

Isabel is my own 14 times great grandmother. So all the people mentioned are also my own
ancestors, stretching back to the early middle ages.

Do you have a connection with Isabel Dutton? Get in touch if you do.

Do you have a story to tell? Why not tell it in Gen Mag Online. Unfortunately, at this stage it is not
possible to pay for any submissions, but you will be given acknowledgement for any articles
        published.

If you would like to contribute, just email genmagonline@gmail.com and either send your finished
article or if you prefer, have a discussion of an idea. Either is OK.
