According to an article posted in the gleaner on January 9, 2020. Rodolph Pink the Maroon
leader of Scott’s Hall Maroon Town in St Mary urges the government to ratify Maroons
sovereignty. He said, and I quote ‘The Maroons being armed with the peace treaty between
the maroons and British still do not have autonomy over their lands and villages the way they
should, as outlined in the treaty. The leader continues to argue the Maroons signed two
treaties to seal a bond which has no ending with the Maroons being a sovereign nation.
The Maroons are not included in the decision makings of the country. Their laws are not
recognized by the Government of Jamaica. However, the Maroons continue to have their own
rules and regulations. They are led by Kernels, they have ministers, under different portfolios
of security, finance and agriculture and more. This allow the Maroon’s to continue their
practices in their villages but they still need to be recognized by the Jamaican Government as
a sovereign people. Nevertheless, the government still have the right to penalize a Maroon
settler who is considered breaking the laws of Jamaica. I believe the Maroons as an
indigenous nation deserve the right to be exempt from these forces. Long ago the treaty
signed by the Maroons rewarded them the right to have their own government.
