BRACKETS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Brackets come in pairs.
Brackets are used to insert useful, but not essential, information into a sentence.
Brackets are used around numbers, abbreviations and alternatives.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Talk about the different punctuation signs used in language.
• Full stop
• Question mark
• Exclamation mark
• Speech marks
• Commas
• Semi-colons
• Colons
• Apostrophes
• Dashes
• Hyphens
3. Introduce the children to brackets by drawing them on the board. Ask the class when brackets are
used – see above.
4. Let the children have a race to find the following verses to see how brackets are used.
Genesis 2:12 Numbers 13:11 1 Chronicles 2:21 Jonah 1:10
5. Give lots of examples of the use of brackets, eg Acts 13:1, 8.
Paris (France) is a beautiful city.
The Automobile Association (AA) helps many motorists.
The Second World War (1939-1945) was won by Britain and her allies.
After school (but before Cubs) we played games.
The new house (where I am going in August) is near Hereford.
6. Warn the children that it is sometimes challenging to decide if dashes or brackets are needed in
some sentences.
7. Let the children complete the worksheet to consolidate their learning.
