ONOMATOPOEIA
Truth to Teach (Source)
Review Y5 teaching on onomatopoeia.
Onomatopoeia means words that sound the same as the noises they describe.
Onomatopoeia adds interest to creative writing.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Give the children five minutes to make as many words as they can from the
word onomatopoeia.
2. Write the names of some creatures and things on the board for the children to
think of onomatopoeic words to include in a sentence.
E.g. cuckoo lightning bell jelly mud mouse elephant sheep owl
3. Talk about the reasons for using onomatopoeia in creative writing (to add
interest).
4. Read some poems which use onomatopoeia.
5. Let the children complete the worksheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children may be inspired to use onomatopoeia in their creative writing.
