CONNECTIVES

            Truth to Teach (Source)

 Review Y5 teaching on connectives.

 Connectives which link ideas within a sentence are called conjunctions.

 Other connectives link ideas in separate sentences.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Let the children work in pairs to list as many connectives as they can recall.

                3. Gather back to compile a list on the board.

                4. Remind the children that connectives which join ideas within sentences are called conjunctions,
whereas other connectives link ideas between sentences.

                5. Warn the children about using too many connectives to make sentences too long. Give
                    examples.

                6. Talk about short words which are connectives and longer words/phrases which are
connectives. Remind the children of the double conjunctions.

if, so, but, and, unless, then, as, before, because, also, though, when, where, who, yet

notwithstanding, nonetheless, whenever, meanwhile, furthermore, consequently, henceforth,
whereas, in addition to, in spite of, so that, although, as well as, suddenly, firstly, secondly, etc

                    either …. or, neither…..nor

                7. Less able children may benefit from writing the connectives on chains and joining them
                    together.

                8. Let them complete the worksheet.

            Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

                1. The children should be used to using connectives appropriately in their writing.

                2. They will appreciate the over-use of connectives.
