IDIOMS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Idioms are common sayings which people use to make their speech more
interesting.
To value sayings Jesus has given to us.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Introduce the lesson using idioms, e.g.
Don’t go down the drain or get on your high horse if I give you some different
work today. I know you think that you lead a dog’s life but I don’t want you to
be at a loose end unless you are off colour. By now you will have put two and
two together so I will let the cat out of the bag.
Let the children identify them, interpret them and then discuss their use.
Explain that they are picture language and easily understood.
3. Let the children look up Matthew 7:6 to find an idiom (Don’t throw your pearls
before swine).
4. Let the children interpret some idioms in pairs (see separate sheet).
5. Gather back to share.
6. The children could complete the worksheet to extend their knowledge of
idioms.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have been introduced to idioms and will be familiar with a
number of them.
2. They will appreciate how they can be used in everyday speech to add interest.
