Let the children identify the phrases and clauses.

            4. Talk about clauses being at the beginning, end and in the middle of sentences,
e.g. As the cock was crowing, Peter denied knowing Jesus. - Beginning
John, known as the Baptist, was Jesus’ relation. - Middle

Peter was a fisherman until he became a disciple. - End

            5. Write a sentence with a main and a subordinate clause, e.g.
I painted a picture, which I could give to my grandmother.

When the fire alarm went off, everyone ran from the building.
He felt ill, so he stayed in.
Because it was cold, we put our heating on.

Let the children identify the main clause (in bold). Talk about main and

subordinate clauses. Point out that the two types of clause may be separated by
                 a comma.

The subordinate clause serves the main clause. The subordinate clause may
                 begin with a conjunction, e.g.
Although it is summer, it is cold.
We played some music while we travelled.
Yesterday, since we finished our work quickly, we had no homework.

            6. Give the children opportunity to join two separate sentences with a conjunction to
make one sentence with two clauses, e.g.
John went to the shops. He bought some bread.

John went to the shops to buy some bread.

The children played happily together. They shared their toys.
The children played happily together and shared their toys.

            7. The children should complete the worksheet to consolidate their learning.

         Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

            1. The children should be confident in recognising main and subordinate clauses.

middle or at the end of the sentence.
