PHRASES AND CLAUSES
Truth to Teach (Source)
I Corinthians 12 Each part of the body is important.
Review Y5 teaching on phrases and clauses.
Sentences are made up of lots of words, often grouped into phrases or clauses.
A phrase is a group of words which has no verb and does not make sense on its
own.
A clause has a verb and also adds information to a sentence though it makes no sense
on its own.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Talk about the parts of a sentence – nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions,
connectives, pronouns and articles. Each one is important just as the parts of the
body are in 1 Corinthians 12. Phrases and clauses are parts of sentences and are
important.
2. Remind the children that a phrase is a group of words which has no verb and makes
no sense on its own. It adds detail to a sentence. There may be more than one phrase
in a single sentence.
3. Let the children take a simple sentence out of a box then add a phrase to it (see
separate sheet).
4. Talk about clauses, which also add information to a sentence, but which have a verb.
They do not make sense on their own. Remind them of CCTV – clauses contain the
verb.
5. Let the children use their original sentence to add a clause.
6. The children should complete the worksheet to consolidate their learning.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be confident in recognising, and using, phrases and clauses.
