            To write a novel
Talk about the parts of a novel:-
                       • Setting

                       • Characters
                       • Plot
                       • Ending

Hopefully, the book ‘Children of the Oregon Trail’ by Rutgers van der Loeff, or some
other exciting adventure story, will be being read to the class. Give background
information of the Oregon Trail across the Wild West of America.

Briefly discuss transport, provisions, lifestyle, characters, etc.

Let the children make rough notes about a fictional family of their own who will make
the long journey across America. Ask them to plan names for the family, give ages,

character profiles, clothing suitable for the period, etc. Drawings could be made of
the family in art lessons or for homework, if time is limited.
