At the end of the lesson, let the children encourage one another by sharing their
psalms.
LESSON 9
To write a persuasive text
Talk about the use of persuasive texts summarising Acts 13:1-21. Outline the
features of a persuasive text: -
• It is written with the view of changing people’s opinions
• It is often a combination of appeals to the emotions and to the mind
• The key issues in persuasive text are usually evident in the first few sentences
• Persuasive texts may include fact and opinion, though opinion is sometimes
disguised as fact
• The texts often repeat key facts and arguments
• They aim to provoke and emotional response in the reader
The children could write out their testimony (if they are Christians) in such a way
that they are trying to persuade their readers to become Christians. If they are not
Christians, another topic should be chosen, e.g. Why the Bible is a good book to read;
Why children should, or should not, have to wear school uniform; Why it is important
to eat healthily.
LESSON 10
To conduct an interview
Let the children interview a local person they admire or wish to find out more about.
Remind them of note-taking procedures, direct and reported speech. The interview
should be written up as reported speech with some direct quotes within it.
LESSON 11
To write a thanksgiving prayer
Discuss with the children their best memories of their primary school days. Read
some thanksgiving prayers: -
• Hebrews 13 v 15 - 16
• Isaiah 38 v 1 - 5
• Philemon 4 v 5
• Philippians 1 v 3 - 5
Ask the children to write a prayer of thanksgiving for their years of education, for
what they have learnt, friends they have made, experiences they have had, etc.
