3. Explain that we are going to compare the Roman Empire with the Kingdom
of God.
Create two lists on the board showing the differences between a kingdom
and an empire. (‘Empire’ comes from the Roman word ‘imperium’ meaning
‘power’ or ‘authority’. The Kingdom of God is where Jesus rules.)
Eg Roman Empire Kingdom of God
Has an emperor Has a king
Worshipped gods Worshipped God
Man-centred God-centred
Limited scope Worldwide
Established by force People respond – free will
Empire fell Kingdom is eternal
4. Go through the worksheet with the children using the answers at the
bottom of the sheet to fill in the blanks.
Answers: past, future, happen, King, obeyed, prophets, Romans,
worship, Empire, collapse, Kingdom, kings
5. Let the children use the internet or books to find out more about the
Romans, see pictures, etc.
6. Let them colour the title page. Give the verses in Acts as homework if
time is short.
Learning for Life
It is hoped that the children will understand that God is sovereign over the
universe and the events of history; that we can learn from the past and be
secure about the future as the Kingdom of God is eternal. They should also
understand that we live in the places God has chosen for us at this time so that
we can seek God and get to know him more.
