Science Y3/Y4 – Water – week 8
WATER AS VAPOUR
Truth to Teach (Source)
To establish that water can exist in the three forms of solid, liquid, gas.
To distinguish between evaporation and condensation, learning the definitions of both and their
importance in our daily lives.
To appreciate God’s economy in creating the water cycle.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the teaching of the previous few weeks.
2. Show a chart of the water cycle. Let the children work in pairs to describe to each other
how the water cycle works, perhaps by drawing pictures. (This will have been covered in
the autumn term.)
3. Gather back to create a drawing of it on the board. Ensure that each child knows the
definition of evaporation and condensation, also that they are opposites.
Condensation: Tiny drops of liquid formed when a gas or vapour changes into a liquid.
Evaporation: The change from a solid or liquid into a vapour.
4. Ask the children if they know how the white trails left by aircraft are formed.
(It is due to condensation. Cold air higher in the sky cannot hold as much water as warm
air so some of the water condenses to form tiny droplets of water.) Ask where else we
notice evaporation and/or condensation.
5. The experiments on the worksheet may have to be conducted by the teacher with help
from the children. Put boiling water in a bowl covered with cling film. Lay ice cubes on the
top of the cling film. This shows condensation and evaporation.
6. Let the children complete as much of the sheet as they can then gather back to review
the main teaching points.
7. Stress God’s wisdom and economy in ‘recycling’ water on the earth through evaporation
and condensation.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should understand the importance of condensation and evaporation in our daily
lives. They should remember that water can be found in three different forms. There should
be a sense of wonder and awe as the children consider God who created the water cycle and
the fact that he does not need to keep on creating more water on the earth.
