To Teach: Write “th” on the whiteboard. Read to the child: T
and H together can make two sounds. The first sound /th/ (as
in THINK) is voiceless, or made only with air. The second sound
/TH/ (as in THE) is voiced, or made by vibrating the vocal cords.
Have the child tap the letters “th” on the whiteboard and say
“/th/” and “/TH/” several times.
• Ask the child: What sounds does TH make? [/th/ as in THINK
and /TH/ as in THE] NOTE: There is no rule
• Have the child practice reading the words that tells you when to

Ways to Practice
Simply have the child practice the words
repeatedly, giving help when needed.
Have the child whisper the letter sounds MASTERED
and then say the word loudly.
