GREEK VASES

            Truth to Teach (Source)

 To introduce Greek culture through pictures of vases, etc

 To recognise the shape and name of a selection of vases

 To decorate a vase with a Greek pattern

 To recognise the gifts and talents of the Greeks and the impact they have had
                    on the world.

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Show pictures from books or on the Internet of Greek vases. Talk about the
importance of archaeologists who have studied pottery remains and found out
more about Greek culture and life.

                3. Divide the class into groups or pairs to be ‘archaeologists’. Ask them to look

at the pictures and deduce how the Greeks lived, what they saw as important,
                    etc. Note the Greek patterns.

                4. Gather back to share from their discussions and anything else they have

discovered about the Greeks over the half-term. Talk about the Greeks’
strengths and weaknesses, eg deep thinkers, athletic, creative but so much
stress was placed on head knowledge rather than the spiritual aspects of life,
                    idol worship, etc

                5. Let the children decorate a picture of Greek vase and/or make one out of
                    modelling clay.

Later in the week, a Greek food tasting time could be arranged to complete the
                    work on
                the Greeks (see separate sheet).
