Science Y6 – Electricity – week 1

                                              CONSTRUCTING CIRCUITS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Jeremiah 10:12-13 ‘But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the
heavens by his understanding. … He sends lightning with the rain….’

 Recognise God as the creator of all natural resources we use to make electricity.

 Construction of circuits with varying components.

        Way to Work (Means)

Equipment: Wires, bulbs, batteries, switches, crocodile clips

            1. Introduce the new topic by giving the children a quiz on material which was covered in former classes.

                 a) Name two kinds of electricity (static, current).
                 b) What is the difference between the two kinds? (Static stays still, current moves through wires)
                 c) Which unit of measurement is used to measure electricity? (Volts)
                 d) What does electricity give us in our daily lives? (Heat, power, light, movement)
                 e) Who invented the battery? (Volta)
                 f) What is a circuit? (A circle of wires, batteries and bulbs)
                 g) What does a switch do in a circuit? (Opens and closes the supply of electricity.)
                 h) Name two conductors of electricity (mainly metals).
                 i) Name two insulators (cork, rubber, etc).
                 j) Where do we see static electricity? (Lightning, taking a nylon jumper off)
                 k) Why do light bulbs stop working? (The wire inside breaks.)
                 l) Which mathematical signs do we see on a battery? (+ and -)

            2. Give each group of children a box containing wires, crocodile clips, bulbs, batteries to construct simple circuits.

            3. Give the groups some switches to fit into the circuits. Let the children experiment by changing the positions of
                 the components.

            4. Gather back to show them how to draw the circuits using the correct symbols.

                                                                                       Batteries

                              1.5 v 3 v 4.5 v

                                     Bulb Switch

            5. End by discussing spiritual parallels we can draw from circuits, eg the complete closed circuit needed for the
bulbs to light up could represent our relationship with Jesus. The switch could be prayer, Bible study, etc. Doing
wrong can break our circuit but it is repairable through the cross.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The children will have been reminded of work covered in former classes. They will know how to draw circuits using the
correct symbols. The children will hopefully be challenged to maintain their spiritual circuits.
