Science Y6 – Electricity – week 4/5
MAKING MODELS WITH ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Application of learning put into practice.
Making models using electrical circuits.
Way to Work (Means)
Equipment: Batteries, wires, switches, bulbs, crocodile clips, shoe and other shaped boxes, tubes, tape, drawing pins,
card, paper, etc
1. Review the previous lessons.
2. Talk about circuits we see in our lives, eg electronic quiz games, burglar alarms, torches.
3. Give the children the opportunity to discuss models they would like to make.
Eg a) A light in a doll’s house made out of a shoe box.
b) A burglar alarm which lights up when someone steps in a room.
c) An electronic quiz game.
d) A lighthouse made from a washing-up liquid container.
e) A Morse-code transmitter.
f) A torch made from a washing-up container.
g) A game for a steady hand made from a bent coat hanger. The player has to guide a ring on a rod
over the coat hanger. The rod is connected to a circuit so when the ring touches the coat hanger
the bulb lights up.
4. The children will have two weeks to complete the model. Some may work in pairs. Provide the children with books
to give them ideas.
5. At the end of the project, give time for each child to share how they planned and made their model.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will have had the opportunity to apply their learning on electricity to a practical project, using a variety of
skills. They will also be more aware of where we see circuits in our daily lives.
