Science Y6 – Heat – week 2

                                                    KEEPING WARM
        Truth to Teach (Source)

Matthew 24:12-13 ‘Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to
                              the end will be saved.’

 The need to keep spiritually ‘hot’.

 Fair tests to identify the best materials for mugs and teapots.

 Making careful observations and measurements then recording them appropriately.

        Way to Work (Means)

Equipment: Teapot, kettles, mugs made of plastic, china, pottery, glass and metal, variety of materials large enough to
                       go around the mugs, thermometers

            1. Review the first lesson.

            2. Read and discuss the above verses. Being continually filled with the Holy Spirit helps us to keep spiritually ‘hot’.

            3. Pour some boiling water into a teapot at the start of the lesson and test it every five minutes, recording the
                 temperature on the board.

            4. Ask the children to choose which mug they would select from a display of china, pottery, metal, plastic and glass
ones. Share reasons for their choice.

            5. Divide the children into groups to design and conduct fair tests on each of the mugs to see which one keeps the
boiling water hottest for the longest period of time. Decide on the time intervals at which the temperatures are
                 to be tested.

            6. Gather to share results. Discuss with the children how they are going to record their results clearly and whether
their tests were fair. Graphs and / or tables may be drawn on the computer or by hand. Alternatively, the
                 worksheet could be used.

            7. End by talking briefly about how we, as human beings, keep warm in all seasons.
Talk about warm-blooded and cold-blooded creatures. Discuss suitable clothing for cold weather referring back
to the ‘Materials’ topic. Some children may like to find out more about hypothermia, keeping warm at high
                 altitudes, etc.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

The lesson should have given the children more experience in designing their own experiments and in conducting fair tests.
They should recognise that the knowledge they are acquiring can be applied to everyday situations.
