THERMOS FLASKS
Truth to Teach (Source)
How thermos flasks work to keep things hot.
Hay-box cookery
Way to Work (Means)
Equipment: Thermos flasks, thermometers
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Read the children parts of the article about hay box cookery on the web-site: -
www.preparedhome.co.uk/haybox.htm
Scouts used to use this method of keeping things hot and / or cooking them once they had initially heated them
on a campfire. It is a fuel-saving technique.
3. Discuss other ways of keeping food and drinks hot.
4. Show the children an insulated mug and a thermos flask. More information may be obtained from the Internet
about such flasks on:-
www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_flask_24k
(A vacuum flask is a vessel which keeps its contents hotter or cooler than their environment by interposing an
evacuated region to provide thermal insulation between the contents and the environment.
A practical vacuum flask is a bottle made of glass, metal, or plastic with hollow walls; the narrow region between
the inner and outer wall is evacuated of air. It can also be considered to be two thin-walled bottles nested one
inside the other, and sealed together at their necks.)
5. Give each group of children two thermos flasks. One is to be filled with cold liquid, or even ice cubes, and one
with boiling water. The temperatures of both should be taken to start with and at set intervals thereafter.
6. The children should record their results after writing about how a thermos flask works.
7. End by reviewing the lesson and thanking God for inventors who have used their God-given gifts to invent things
to enhance our lives.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children should be confident in using thermometers, taking and recording temperatures. They should know how a
thermos flask works and its use in our lives.
