        Truth to Teach (Source)

        Heart concepts: Covenant love, justice

 To be discerning in reading fairy tales

 God has his own way of blessing those who make kind or wise choices

     Way to Work (Means)

            1. Look at a composite picture showing characters from fairy tales, or skim through a
book of fairy tales. How many characters do the children know?

            2. Talk about parents and grandparents hearing these stories when they were little.

They are not in the Bible. They are not Aesop’s fables either. They are known as
fairy-tales. Some were written by two brothers from Germany, whose surname was
Grimm. Others were written by a Danish man called Hans Christian Andersen. Many
fairy tales have been made into pantomimes.

            3. Ask what the children know about life in the world of fairy-tales. (Take the children’s
answers and shape/ expand them to bring out some of the following points.)
                       • unreal world – how can you tell?

                       • character types – some have special powers
good (princess, prince, children, fairy godmother)
bad (witch, wicked fairy, wicked stepmother, wolf)
                       • stories of evil, greed and spells, as well as of kindness and rescue

                       • the ending –the beautiful girl marries the prince and ‘they all lived happily
ever after’ or a similar sentiment – what about the nasty characters? – a
reminder that God has His own way of blessing those who do right and
dealing with those who choose evil – a diamond in the dust!

            4. Compare life in our real world. (It is about knowing God, choosing friendship with
him, trusting him in difficult situations and sharing his love with others.)

             5. Encourage the children to be discerning, and let the peace of God rule in your hearts

as you read a book. If as you are reading you are beginning to think, “This really
isn’t very nice,” you can always decide not to finish the story. Be wise with your
eyes! Value the diamonds, but discard the dust.
