THE PARABLE OF THE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concepts: Communication
Jesus communicated aspects of truth creatively and effectively through parables.
To study the Parable of the Pearl of Great Price
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the last lesson.
2. Talk about Jesus teaching truths of the Kingdom of God through his parables, and that he wanted
people to grow in their faith. People responded in different ways.
3. Explain that telling parables was a powerful way for Jesus to get his message of truth across, and
even the religious leaders, who did not really want to learn from Jesus, would sometimes find
themselves listening to a story, and suddenly they would see the hidden meaning in it.
4. Ask the children what sort of attitude we should have as we come to look at another of Jesus’
parables (humble).
Remind them that there is a need to ‘suck’ the parable to get to the solid ‘raisin’ of truth in the centre
of it. Be open to praying.
5. Read through the parable you have selected for a comprehension passage.
E.g. ‘The Pearl of Great Price’ from ‘Best Loved Parables: Stories Jesus told’ by Lois Rock,
published by Lion, ISB 0-7459-3803-5
Encourage children to show how they arrived at their answers, to ensure they are using the passage
and not just their memory of this story. Where relevant ask them to express their ideas in their own
words.
6. Explain that in order for the children to come to a Christian School for which their parents have to
pay, they may have to do without other things. Ask who has heard their parents say, “No, you can’t
have this or that because it is too expensive, and we can’t afford it.” Let them consider which is more
valuable – having things or knowing Jesus.
7. Ask the children to write the answers to the questions. Quick finishers could perhaps write a prayer
of response to this parable, thanking Jesus for being the Pearl of Great Price, and more precious than
anything else, and that He is worth knowing.
8. Remind the children that as people left Jesus to go home, some found themselves just remembering
the story; while those who had seen the hidden meaning in it, remembered the story and also the truth
Jesus wanted to teach them as well.
