A TRUE STORY - JESUS COMING TO EARTH
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concept: Communication
God is a communicating God, who communicates creatively, effectively and truthfully with us, so
that we may know him and his will better. God desires that we communicate creatively, effectively
and truthfully with him and with other people.
Way to Work (Means)
Two possible lessons:-
Lesson 1 The birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38)
Lesson 2 Special Visitors - shepherds (Luke 2: 1-20) and the wise men (Matthew 2:1-12)
These lessons could link with writing activities and the children could write their own account of the coming of
Jesus, or a particular section of it.
The birth of Jesus (Luke 1:26-38)
1. Refer to the coming celebration of Christmas. What is the real meaning of Christmas?
Why did Jesus come to earth? (To save us from our sins. But why? So that we could draw near to
God and get to know him.)
God wanted to communicate his Father’s heart with us, so that we would know him as our Father. He
decided to send us his Son, Jesus, who would tell people what he is like, but more than that he would
show by everything he did what his Father is like! Jesus would be a living model of his Father! - Not
on the outside, but on the inside, and as well, he would die to take away our sins.
2. John calls Jesus the ‘Word’. Read John 1: 1, 14a. Jesus became a person and became the Living
Word!
But that was alright for those people who were living at the time of Jesus and in the same country.
Ask some questions - What about people of different countries and times? How were they to get to
know about Jesus and his Father?
God thought of everything, and he put it in the hearts of some men to write down things Jesus said
and did. Now we have the written word – show a Bible.
Jesus was the Word of God. He became the Living Word, and now we can read about him in the
written word!
3. Summarise Luke 1:26-38. This is what actually happened; it is a true story. (Not like a parable, which
is made up and teaches us truth)
4. Use The Lion First Bible by Pat Alexander published by Lion, ISBN 0-7459-3210-X or a similar book.
Read from the section ‘Mary and the Angel’ pages 284- 289 and discuss.
5. Read through to the end of page 289 and discuss.
