CAPITALS FOR PROPER NAMES- PEOPLE, PETS, PLACES, DAYS, MONTHS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Isaiah 43:1b ‘I have summoned you by name, you are mine.’
God knows us each by our proper name.
The names of people, pets, places, days and months have capital letters. They are proper
names.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the first lesson.
2. Show the children some common objects like paper clips, pencils, rubbers, etc and explain that there
are lots of them and they are said to be common things. They are given a common name. However,
some words are special words and are given proper names.
3. Ask the children who have younger siblings if they remember when their brothers or sisters were
christened or dedicated. They were given a proper name when they were born and this is often
referred to at christenings and dedications.
4. Compare the word people as a common name with names of the children in the class eg Tom, Susan,
Ann. These are proper names because they are special people. Jesus knows us by our special name.
5. Refer to people in the Bible like Samuel whose name had meaning. Our names are called proper
names as they distinguish us from other people. We always use a capital letter for proper names.
6. Let the children share other occasions when we use capital letters for special names – names of pets,
places, days, months, etc.
7. The children may like to write a proper name for every letter of the alphabet, either children’s names
or places or a mixture of days, months, pets, etc.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should know what a proper name is and that it needs a capital letter.
2. They should be able to distinguish between a common and proper noun.
