IDENTIFYING SENTENCES
Truth to Teach (Source)
A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop or a question mark or an
exclamation mark.
A sentence makes sense.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Give the children lots of oral practice on recognising a spoken and written sentence.
2. Write parts of sentences on the board for the children to see that they do not make sense.
3. Let the children cut pictures out of catalogues and write a sentence about each or prepare a list of
complete and incomplete sentences for them to tick or cross and correct inaccurate ones.
4. Talk about the importance of capital letters to start sentences. Discuss the three kinds of endings –
full stops, exclamation marks and question marks.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be confident in recognising a sentence.
