7. Explain that this is a sentence – it’s a complete thought. (For example, ‘Come and’ is not a sentence.)
To show this in written language the first letter of the first word in the sentence is written with a
capital letter. Replace ‘come’ with ‘Come’ and put another cap on the child holding that word, trying
to ensure that the ‘C’ is under the cap.
8. Discuss how to signal the end of the sentence. Let another child hold a large full stop at the end of
the sentence.
9. Repeat with several sentences. Examples might be: -
my cat is called mog
sam and i love jesus
we live in England
10. Ask children to complete the related worksheet.
(Learning to use capital letters and full stops correctly is a process which is likely to last all of the
year. This sort of lesson gives something to refer to and a base from which can be added the
children’s understanding, for example using capital letters with days of the week and months of the
year.)
Learning for life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be increasingly able to use capital letters to signal proper names for
people, pets and places, etc as well as use a capital letter and a full stop to signal the beginning
and end of a sentence respectively.
2. They should be reminded of God’s holiness and worth.
3. They should have a more respectful attitude towards God and others.
