LONG VOWELS
Truth to Teach (Source)
There are long and short vowel sounds.
The long vowel sounds are like the name of the letter eg a, e, i, o, u.
The short vowel sounds are like the sound the letter makes.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Put lots of words on the board with missing short vowel sounds, eg c-t, r-bbit, t-n, sh-d, j-g, m-d.
Put some with long vowel sounds missing, eg m-le, sp-ne, -se, p-per, p-ke.
2. Give lots of oral practice on short and long vowel sounds. Use signs over the vowels if it helps some
children – Pēter, cŏt, cūbe, cǔt.
3. Let the children work in pairs to look in books or think of words with short and long vowel sounds in
them.
4. Gather back to share after a set time.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be more confident in recognising words with short and long vowel sounds in them.
