COPY-CAT FRIENDS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Heart concepts: Love
Unity and diversity
Christians may look different on the outside, but the Spirit of Christ within them can cause them to
sound alike.
To introduce the concept of ‘copy-cat friends’ to help the children learn words with similar sounds
but different letters
Way to Work (Means)
1. Ask if the children have ever played a copy-cat game with their friends. One person says something
and the other person copies it exactly, saying the same thing in the same tone of voice. Take some
time to do this as a class.
2. Explain that it is a case of two friends looking different and although they are not twins, they sound
the same. It is like playing a game of copy-cat friends.
3. In the Bible there are two good friends who travelled a lot telling people about Jesus. They were Paul
and Barnabas. They looked different, yet their message about Jesus and what he had done was much
the same. The Spirit of Jesus was living in each of them and speaking through them. Paul and
Barnabas were not playing a game of Copy-cat friends, but they were both friends and disciples of
Jesus. I guess we could say that different disciples often sound alike.
4. Explain that over the year we are going to look at many copy-cat friends: long vowel copy-cat friends,
consonant copy-cat friends and some other ones too. The different letter pairings will look different
but they will sound the same.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should appreciate that certain pairings of two vowels or two consonants or pairings of a
vowel and a consonant may sound the same as another pairing or indeed a single letter.
2. They may realise that God’s Spirit within Christians unites them and can cause them to speak with one
voice.
3. They should recognise that each of them is different but that God is shaping each of them to act and
sound more like his Son.
