GIVE IT A NAME!
        Truth to Teach (Source)

 Just as God named what he created, as a sign of his Lordship over it, so people tend to name what
they create or have authority over. (Genesis 1; Genesis 2:19-20)

 In our language a set of naming words (nouns) can be identified. These words essentially identify
people, pets, places and things; they can usually be touched or handled. (No abstract nouns at this
                    stage.)

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Show a picture of the Garden of Eden from a story book. Talk about the beginning when life must
have been very exciting and wonderful for Adam with God in the garden. Everything was so new and
fresh and unspoiled. Read and discuss Genesis 2:19–20.

            2. Read and discuss Steve Turner’s poem ‘The Naming of the Animals’.

            3. Ask the children if they think that Adam named everything on earth. The Bible says that God named
some things: day, night, sky, sea, and land. As he named them, it was as if he was declaring that he
was in charge of them. ‘I made them and I rule over the land and sea and sky and day and night.’ But
he wanted man to rule over the animals for him so he asked man to name them. When you give
something or someone a name you may be in charge of them.

            4. Ask the children who named them. Their parents are responsible for them.

            5. Let the children share about toys, pets, etc which they have named. Talk about what it means to be in
charge. Looking after it, training it…

            6. Explain that in our language there are a lot of words which we could call naming words. They may be
proper names like God, Adam, Eve, or they may be ordinary naming words like girl, boy, tree, shoe…
Anything that you can touch, or pick up is a naming word.

            7. Tell the children that over the next few weeks we are going to be looking more closely at naming
words, and they might even learn some new ones. A young child will only know a few to start off with
                 - mama, dada, juice…, but as they grow they gradually get to know more and more and they can
                 communicate accurately with other people.

            8. Spread various pictures on the ground, and identify specific parts of animals using naming words
                 written on cards.

            9. Let the children complete the worksheet. More able children could write some sentences to describe
                 other animals.

        Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

                   1. The children should recognise a naming word or noun.

                   2. They should see God as Lord over all he has made.

                   3. They should recognise how they are both under authority and in authority at the same time.
