PUNCTUATION DETECTIVES
Truth to Teach (Source)
1 Peter 5:8 ‘Be sober, be vigilent …’
¾ Just as we need to be alert in our spiritual lives, so we need to be alert in
other areas of our lives
¾ Punctuation serves the listener and reader of language by bringing order to
language
¾ Review previous teaching on punctuation
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Recall with the children all the punctuation signs they have learned so far: -
x Full stops
x Question marks
x Exclamation marks
x Speech marks
x Apostrophes
x Commas
Talk about the way in which each is used. Write lots of examples on the board.
3. Re-envision the children regarding punctuation which brings order to spoken
and written language; it serves the listener and the reader.
4. Talk through any common mistakes the children are making in their writing.
Draw their attention to the need to be alert, when reading or writing, to note
the punctuation signs. Remind the children that they are to be like detectives,
looking for clues and missing signs.
5. Let the children try the worksheet.
