Y5 Autumn Term Part 2. CW Lesson 11
APOSTROPHES
Truth to Teach (Source)
¾ To review Y3 and Y4 teaching on apostrophes
¾ Apostrophes are used to show when letters are missing from words, e.g. isn’t
¾ Apostrophes are used to show ownership, e.g. Tom’s
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Write on the board the following:-
God Us
Ask how this connects with an apostrophe.
Explain that when God removes the sin in us he puts his Holy Spirit within us
and we become part of his family. This is God’s contract with us; it is a sign.
When we remove letters from words we use an apostrophe to show where
letters were previously; it is a sign. Shortened words are called ‘contractions’.
3. Ask different children to write a contraction on the board, e.g. can’t, don’t,
they’ve, I’m. Ask every child to try to think of a contraction.
4. Encourage the children to recall other occasions when apostrophes are used.
They are used to show possession, e.g. Tim’s, men’s, animals’.
Give lots of examples to ensure the children understand the use of
apostrophes in contraction and in showing possession.
