¾ Review Y4 teaching on adverbs

¾ Adverbs give / add more information about the verb

¾ Adverbs tell how, when and where the action takes place

¾ Introduce the word ‘dialogue’ as conversation between characters

            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review previous lessons.

                2. Ask the children for definitions of nouns, verbs, adjectives and pronouns.
Review the different kinds of nouns, verbs and pronouns (see separate sheet).

                3. Sit the class in a circle and let each child in turn take a card (see separate

sheet) out of a bag then give an example of that kind of word, e.g. proper noun,
                    possessive pronoun.

                4. Ask the children for a definition of an adverb – a word which gives more

information about the verb. It tells how, when and where an action takes place.

Let the children give lots of examples, making sentences with adverbs in them.

                5. Explain that creative writing can be improved by using imaginative verbs and
adverbs. Warn them of the repeated use of the word ‘said’.

Talk about writing dialogue / conversation between characters. Let the

children suggest words to be used as verbs and adverbs to describe the way
                    people speak.

E.g. complained crossly, yawned sleepily, climbed confidently, whispered
                    shyly

                6. Give verbs and adverbs for the children to write their own sentences or let
                    them complete the worksheet.
