Y5 Autumn Term. Writing Words (WW)
SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING LESSONS
Most teachers will wish to plan their own writing lessons. These are suggestions
which can be adapted, if required. Teaching in grammar lessons may be referred to
as and when it is appropriate. Extend the children’s vocabulary and write challenging
spellings on the board. Discuss the importance of legible handwriting and punctuation
though the emphasis is clearly on creative or factual writing. Some classes may take
a longer or shorter time on the writing tasks below so flexibility is required.
Term Objectives
1. To fill in forms
2. To write an acrostic poem
3. To write detailed descriptions of people and places
4. To use direct and reported speech
5. To write an imaginary story
6. To write the Christmas story as episodes
LESSON 1
‘ ‘The Uniqueness of Me’ – Filling in a form
Read Genesis 1:26-27, parts of Psalm 139 and Acts 17:26 and discuss the
uniqueness of each individual. The aim, at the start of a new school year, is for the
children to recognise and respect each other’s differences in appearance, gifts and
talents. Let them use the form to create a character profile of themselves (see
separate sheet).
LESSON 2
‘Portrait of a Friend’ – Using forms to write prose
Let the children work in pairs to use the forms filled in during the previous lesson, to
write a piece of descriptive prose about their partner. Each child could ask questions
of the other to provide more detailed information. Emphasise the use of adjectives
and adverbs, the use of connectives, similes, abstract nouns and a variety of verbs.
LESSON 3
‘Our Unique God’ - An acrostic poem about God
Talk about the different faiths we see people practising in our nation and the various
gods which are worshipped. Discuss the uniqueness of our true God in Exodus 34:6-
