Y5 Autumn Term. Writing Words (WW)
Let the children share ideas of different modes of transport to use to travel to
school. Let them write a fantasy story outlining their route and describing their
vehicle, eg quad bike, spaceship, horse, aeroplane, new machine.
LESSON 6
D Direct and reported speech
Set a scene in which two people share a conversation, e.g. a policeman interviewing a
criminal, a parent talking with a child, a politician and a constituent discussing an
issue, Jesus talking with the woman at the well in John 4. Ask the children to write a
short conversation using direct speech then change it into reported speech.
LESSONS 7-8
An imaginary story
Put a number of very different objects into a bag for the children to take one each.
List them on the board as they are taken. Ask the children if they could incorporate
these objects into an imaginary story. Let them share ideas before writing their own
stories.
LESSONS 9-13
The Christmas Story
Depending on how the Christmas Story has been written in previous years, choose
either a play, story with episodes with ‘cliff-hanger endings’, a report written by a
journalist or as a series of character portraits of Mary, Joseph, a shepherd and a
king.
