Y5 Autumn Term Part 1. CW Lesson 1
5. Remind the children that God is each of the above nouns: -
x Common noun when he became a man
x Proper noun – God
x Singular noun – one God
x Plural noun – the Trinity
x Collective noun – the Trinity
6. Sit the children in a circle and let each child take a card, bearing the name of
a type of noun, out of a bag or box (see separate sheet). Each child should
seek to give an example of that kind of noun.
7. Introduce abstract nouns using Galatians 5:22 – love, joy, peace, etc. Abstract
nouns name a feeling or an idea.
Talk about how adjectives can often be made into abstract nouns, e.g. wealthy
– wealth; poor – poverty; happy – happiness
8. The children could draw a table with seven columns in their books or on a
computer to find nouns of each kind, or they could complete worksheet 1.
Some children may like to find nouns beginning with every letter of the
alphabet by using worksheet 2.

Explain that they must not use the same noun twice unless it is a difficult
letter like ‘q’, ‘z’ or ‘x’.
An alternative activity would be giving some abstract nouns to include in
sentences.
8. Gather to share at the end of the lesson.
