Y5 Autumn Term Part 1. CW Lesson 3
VARIOUS VERBS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’
Hebrews 13:8 ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever.’
¾ God has given us the ability to do, and be, many things.
¾ Review verbs as doing and being words.
¾ Review the three tenses of past, present and future verbs.
¾ Alternative verbs to use instead of ‘said’.
¾ Singular nouns require singular verbs; plural nouns require plural verbs.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson
2. By question and answer, establish how much the children remember about
verbs and the three tenses.
3. Draw a table with three columns on the board for the children to suggest past,
present and future verbs. Less able children may find it helpful to say: -
x Yesterday I ….
x Today I ….
x Tomorrow I ….
Remind them of Hebrews 13:8 and of things Jesus did in the past, does in the
present and will do in the future.
4. Share some sentences in which the noun is singular but the verb is plural, and
vice versa, e.g.
The dog wag its tail. The girls is running fast.
The boy’s dad take his bag. Children is good.
Let the children identify the mistakes and put the sentences right. Explain
that if the noun is singular, the verb must also be singular, and vice versa.
