6. Draw the children’s attention to the pronouns in the table drawn on the board.
Talk about I/we as the first person; you as the second person; he/she/it/they
as the third person.
E.g.
I am tired. First person when the writer speaks about him/herself.
You are tired. Second person when the writer speaks directly to the reader.
She is tired. Third person when the writer speaks about someone else.
7. Stress that if the noun/pronoun is singular the verb has to be singular; if the
noun/pronoun is plural the verb has to be plural.
E.g. He is clever.
You will be early.
We are here.
8. Let the children complete the worksheet to consolidate their learning.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children will have reviewed the tenses of the verb ‘to be’.
2. They will know which is the first, second and third person, when writing.
3. They will know that singular nouns/pronouns need singular verbs and plural
nouns/pronouns need plural verbs.
