Y5 Autumn Term Part 1. CW Lesson 4

                 6. Remind the children about comparative and superlative adjectives.

Comparative adjectives are used when comparing two things. Superlative
adjectives are used when comparing three or more things. E.g.

Root adjective Comparative adjective Superlative adjective
                     small smaller smallest

                     hot hotter hottest
                     strong stronger strongest

                 7. Talk about adjectives that have irregular forms in the comparative and
superlative, e.g. good better best; little less least; many/much more most.

                 8. Introduce the words ‘more’ and ‘most’ that can be added to adjectives with

more than one syllable, e.g. most beautiful, more able, more honest, most
                     famous

                 9. Give the children the challenge of finding an adjective beginning with most

letters of the alphabet to describe God, e.g. almighty, beautiful, caring

Alternatively, the children could complete the worksheet. More able children
may be asked to write sentences including more challenging adjectives which
they may need to look up in a dictionary, e.g. notorious, monotonous,

                     inflammable

            Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

                 1. The children should be confident in using and recognising a variety of
                     adjectives.

                 2. They should fully understand the use of comparative and superlative

                     adjectives.

                 3. They should be familiar with some of the irregular comparative and
                     superlative adjectives.

                 4. They will have seen that some adjectives end in ‘ful’, ‘less’ or ‘y’.
