6. Remind the children about comparative and superlative adjectives.
Comparative adjectives are used when comparing two things. Superlative
adjectives are used when comparing three or more things. E.g.
Root adjective Comparative adjective Superlative adjective
small smaller smallest
hot hotter hottest
strong stronger strongest
7. Talk about adjectives that have irregular forms in the comparative and
superlative, e.g. good better best; little less least; many/much more most.
8. Introduce the words ‘more’ and ‘most’ that can be added to adjectives with
more than one syllable, e.g. most beautiful, more able, more honest, most
famous
9. Give the children the challenge of finding an adjective beginning with most
letters of the alphabet to describe God, e.g. almighty, beautiful, caring
Alternatively, the children could complete the worksheet. More able children
may be asked to write sentences including more challenging adjectives which
they may need to look up in a dictionary, e.g. notorious, monotonous,
inflammable
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be confident in using and recognising a variety of
adjectives.
2. They should fully understand the use of comparative and superlative
adjectives.
3. They should be familiar with some of the irregular comparative and
superlative adjectives.
4. They will have seen that some adjectives end in ‘ful’, ‘less’ or ‘y’.
