                                      DIRECT AND REPORTED SPEECH

                ¾ Speech marks separate spoken words from the rest of a sentence.

                ¾ Review Y3 and Y4 work on speech marks.


                ¾ Direct speech is what is actually spoken.

                ¾ Reported speech is a report of what was spoken.


            Way to Work (Means)

                1.  Review previous lessons.


                2.  Have a child dressed up as a newspaper reporter with an imaginary
                    microphone.
                     Let him/her read out an article of news (see separate sheet).  Discuss with
                    the children whether there would have been any speech marks if they could

                    have seen the report written down.

                    Establish that there would not have been any speech marks because the
                    reporter told the story so it is not clear which words the neighbours actually

                    spoke. Explain that this is called ‘reported speech’. No speech marks are
                    needed.

                3.  Work with the children to change the story into actual conversation, writing it

                    on the board with the appropriate punctuation.

                    E.g.    Mr Greenway shouted, “Your hedge is too high so it blocks the light in
                           my lounge.”

                           Mr Howells answered, “It can’t do that because those trees have been
                           there for years.” …

                4.  Explain to the children that this is called ‘direct speech’ because it is what is
                    actually spoken and it requires speech marks.
