SINGULARS AND PLURALS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Review Y3 work on singular and plural nouns.
Singular nouns name one person, place, thing, idea or feeling
Plural nouns name two or more people, places, things, ideas or feelings.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Have singular nouns pinned around the room for the children to turn into plural nouns
in their rough books (see separate sheet).
3. Gather back after a set time to share results.
4. Ask the children how many of the guidelines they remember for making singular nouns
plural. Ensure they know the difference between singular and plural.
a) Many nouns merely need an ‘s’ adding to the end of the word
b) Words ending in a vowel then a ‘y’ need an ‘s’ adding to the end
c) Words ending in a consonant then a ‘y’ need the end changing to ‘ies’
d) Words ending in ss, sh, ch, zz, z, or x need ‘es’ on the end
e) Many words ending in ‘o’ need ‘es’ adding to the end
f) Many words ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’ need ‘ves’ instead of ‘f’ or ‘fe’ at the end
g) Irregular break all the rules, eg quiz – quizzes, roof – roofs, person – people
deer – deer, sheep - sheep
5. Give lots of examples of a) – g).
6. Let the children complete the worksheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should have been reminded of the various rules for making singular
nouns plural.
2. They should be increasingly accurate in spelling such words in their writing.
