Y5 Spring Term. Part 1 CW Lesson 7
                                                   ROOT WORDS

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Revelation 22:16 ‘”I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the
churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the
                                     bright morning star.”

Isaiah 11:1 ‘A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a
                                     Branch will bear fruit.”

 Jesus described himself as a Root; he was also described as a Branch.

 The root or source of something is very important.

 A lot of words can be made from one original root word. Suffixes or prefixes may be
               added.

 By identifying the main root word, the meanings of words made from it can often be
discovered. They can be found in a dictionary too.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Show the children a plant with its root system. Discuss how the roots spread out

and hold the plant steady. From the roots grows the shoot, branches, leaves, etc.

            2. Talk about Jesus being a Root and a Branch.

            3. Compare this to words made from one root word, eg build, builder, building, built.

            4. Put other root words on the board so that the children can work in pairs to find other
words which ‘branch’ from them. Dictionaries could be used.

Eg sign, final, develop, sense, break, light, help, transform, wood

Remind the children that the root word may be at the beginning, in the middle or at the
end. A root word has no prefixes or suffixes. Suffixes or prefixes may be added.

                       Eg rewrite, writing, handwriting

            5. Gather back to share results. Write some of the examples on the board.
