Y5 Spring Term. Part 1 CW Lesson 8
                                             DICTIONARY WORK 1

        Truth to Teach (Source)

 Review and extend Y4 teaching on the use of dictionaries.

Nehemiah 8:8 ‘They read from the book of the Law of God, making it clear and

giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was
                              being read.’

 It is important for us to increasingly understand what we read, especially In the Bible.

 Dictionaries (spell-checks on computers) may be used to look up the meaning of new
               words, giving us definitions.

 Dictionaries enable pupils to spell words accurately.

 Dictionaries indicate kinds of words, eg noun, verb, adjective.

 It is necessary to recognise root words to use a dictionary.

        Way to Work (Means)

            1. Review the last lesson.

            2. Discuss the advantages of using a dictionary, as above.

            3. Give the children a few words to find in their dictionaries to establish how competent
they are in using them. Some children may need to be given extra practice or,
alternatively, they could work through the Y4 worksheets.

            4. Ensure that the children know how to look for the first, second, third letters, etc.
Refer to the words at the top of the page indicating the range of words on the page.

            5. Remind the children that dictionaries tell us about the spelling and meaning of the

word, whether the word is a noun, verb, etc as well as the pronunciation of the word.
                        n = noun
