Y5 Spring Term. Part 2 CW Lesson 10
UNSTRESSED LETTERS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Review Y4 teaching on syllables.
1 Corinthians 12:12-31 Each part of the body is important.
Many words with two or more syllables have letters, usually vowels, which are not
really heard in the spoken word.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Let the children take a word from a box and say into how many syllables it can be
divided (see separate sheet).
3. Review teaching on syllables, reminding the children about words with a double
consonant in the middle being split between the two consonants, eg rub ber.
4. Read and discuss parts of 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, emphasising that each person is
important regardless of whether they are quiet or more vocal; each has an important
place in God’s family and has a part to play in serving God and others.
5. Write the following words on the board:-
difference frightening business voluntary happening
Explain that many words have letters which seem invisible when they are spoken
aloud. Compare this to people in God’s family who appear insignificant yet are of vital
importance.
Ask the children to identify the unstressed letters in the above words.
6. Talk about the importance of using dictionaries/spell checks to ensure spellings are
correct.
7. Let the children complete the worksheet. More able children may find more words
with unstressed letters in them.
